UFC NEWS: Tito Ortiz injured, Phil Davis in versus Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in UFC Fight Night 24 main event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

OrtizTito_TB150_15.jpg
The main event for UFC Fight Night 24 just got a whole lot more relevant for the light heavyweight division.

UFC President Dana White revealed on Twitter this afternoon that Tito Ortiz has been forced out of the main event fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and in his place steps Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis. Ortiz was forced out after requiring stitches, likely for some type of cut caused in training.

"22 stitches and a bad concussion," Ortiz tweeted. "Sucks but I will heal and be better soon."

Davis has had a rocky month, first losing his UFC 129 opponent Matt Hamill to UFC 130 and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, then getting a replacement in Jason Brilz, and now taking a fight a month earlier to take this opportunity.

He is undefeated at 8-0, with four wins coming inside of the Octagon. His performances have gotten increasingly impressive, the most recent of which being a uniquely modified hammerlock/kimura over Tim Boetsch.

Nogueira looks to rebound from a decision loss to Ryan Bader at UFC 119. That loss came after a thin split decision win over Jason Brilz last May, and he brings a 2-1 mark in the UFC into this headlining fight.

The event takes place from Seattle's KeyArena on March 26, airing live on Spike TV.

Penick's Analysis: This is a huge opportunity for Davis, and gives this fight a lot more meaning in the light heavyweight division. Ortiz may have the name, but he hasn't won a fight since October of 2006. Davis, as one of the top young prospects in the sport, now has a chance to get a win over a legit top 10 light heavyweight, and a win vaults him into the upper echelon of the division.

NHL Trade Rumors: Who Are the Edmonton Oilers Selling Off?

The Edmonton Oilers are widely expected to be one of the most active teams on deadline day because they're one of the few teams far enough out of the playoffs to be definite sellers.

Are there untouchables on the Oilers?

Yes. Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi are definite untouchables. But almost everyone else on the Oilers could be involved in a deal if the price is right.

Who are most likely to be moved?

The 15 Most Nauseating Couples in Sports

When it comes to sports, we fans have a lot of things to talk about. To name but a few topics, entire conversations can revolve around players, coaches, trophies, stadiums, records, stats, schedules and mascots.

But as important as these topics are, I'm afraid that the sports world is unfortunately not free from the same kind of celebrity gossip that has spoiled the minds of anyone that has ever picked up a copy of People magazine or turned the channel to the E! network.

Indeed, sports fans also discuss sports couples. Personally, I can't stand doing it, and the notion that the private lives of all our favorite sports figures are somehow relevant often times makes me sick.

But therein lay an idea. And because I am so incredibly crotchety, I decided to run with it.

Without further ado, I present to you the 15 sports couples who just plain disagree with your mind, body and/or spirit.

BELLATOR NEWS: Hector Lombard to meet Falaniko Vitale in non-title action at Bellator 44

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_237.jpg
Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard will be back in non-title action in the upcoming fourth season, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he will meet Falaniko Vitale at Bellator 44.

Lombard captured the Bellator Middleweight Championship when he won the very first Bellator middleweight tournament in season one. He then clocked two straight knockouts in under a minute in non-title action in Bellator before defeating season two tournament winner Alexander Shlemenko by decision in their season three title bout.

Lombard has now won 16 straight fights, and is unbeaten in his last 21 fights dating back to a November 2006 loss to Gegard Mousasi.

Vitale makes his Bellator debut on a two fight winning streak. He returned to action in 2010 after a 17 month absence that followed a loss to Frank Trigg in Strikeforce in 2008. He brings a 28-9 record throughout a near 12 year career spent mostly in his home state of Hawaii.

No city or venue has been chosen for the May 14 event as of yet, but the fight is expected to headline the MTV2 broadcast.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Lombard has been extremely successful in his MMA career, but it's hard to shake the thought that his talent is being wasted right now. He's fighting competition that is, honestly, beneath him at this point considering his record and the way he's looked in winning a lot of his fights. He could easily be plugged into Strikeforce or the UFC and compete with most, if not all, of the middleweights in either division. But being in Bellator, he's relegated to these types of fights. Vitale is certainly a much more credible opponent than "Whisper" Goodman was last August, but he's nowhere near a top 25 opponent in 2011, and someone like Lombard should regularly be fighting that level of opponent.

BELLATOR NEWS: Former Sengoku Featherweight Champion Marlon Sandro signs with Bellator

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_238.jpg
Bellator has made a huge signing in their featherweight division, as they announced on Wednesday that former Sengoku champ Marlon Sandro has joined the roster. He will not take part in the season four tournament, but he will debut in 2011.

"Marlon Sandro is a phenomenal talent at 145 lbs.," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Our Featherweight division is absolutely stacked and Sandro pushes that talent pool to an even higher level, I'm thrilled to have him on board."

Sandro brings a 17-2 record into Bellator, with his two career losses coming by decision to Michihiro Omigawa and Hatsu Hioki. His departure from Sengoku is another blow to the Japanese organization, but Sandro will make his U.S. debut on MTV2 when he appears this year.

Penick's Analysis: This is a huge signing for Bellator. Sandro is a top ten featherweight, and makes a fantastic addition to Bellator's featherweight roster. Joe Warren's got a great non-title opponent for season four if Bellator wants to go that route.

Ebersole wins UFC debut over Lytle at 127

Veteran fighter Brian Ebersole won his UFC debut 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 over Chris Lytle in an exciting bout at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia.

Ebersole -- who had an arrow pointing up shaved into his chest hair -- opened with his trademark cartwheel kick, but it got him nowhere. Lytle, a UFC veteran, remained calm and continued to land hard shots and avoided the first takedown attempt. On the next one, he allowed Ebersole to take him down while catching a guillotine. Ebersole flipped out of the guillotine twice, but Lytle held on and continued to work on the choke. Ebersole finished the round on top of Lytle and opened a cut on his face just before the rounded ended.

In the second round, Ebersole continued to show off an unorthodox style, trying a spinning back kick and some strikes that can only be described as odd, peppering in conventional leg kicks and strikes. After a takedown attempt, Ebersole knocked Lytle to the ground with a knee. Ebersole followed up with hammerfists and a choke attempt and then frenzied stand-up followed with a slam.

Ebersole had the momentum going into the third round, and again tried the cartwheel kick. Lytle moved away from it, and then threw a ton of strikes. Ebersole defended with a takedown, and again, Lytle tried for a guillotine. Again, he couldn't finish it. The two returned to their feet, and worked the clinch with Ebersole throwing elbows and Lytle hitting inside shots.

Lytle and Ebersole are from the same town -- Indianapolis -- but traveled to Australia to fight. Before Ebersole made Sydney his home, he fought all over the Midwest where he would often see Lytle, but this is the first time they fought. At just 30 years old, Ebersole is 47-14-1. Lytle is now 30-18-5.

UFC QUOTABLES: Rashad Evans responds to Dana White, doesn't regret waiting for title shot despite injury

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

RashadEvans_150artCG_21.jpg
"Dana White says what he says, and one thing you can always appreciate him for is his honesty. I guess sometimes his honesty doesn't favor me, but that's fine. That's okay. He can say our fight was boring, but I have a different perspective being in the fight. There was a lot of points in that fight where my heart rate got up a little bit, so I could never agree that that fight was boring.

He says a Hamill fight would be more exciting? I mean, we'll see. Hamill has pretty much the same style that I have, so we'll see if Hamill's able to make it more exciting than I was. If he's saying it was boring because of me, I don't understand that. I watched the Machida and Rampage fight, and that fight was pretty boring to me.

Even knowing what I know now about what would happen during training, I'd make that same decision again [to wait for the title shot]. The problem is, there's no governing body to the UFC to decide who gets the title shot. There's no ranking, so how do I know when I'll get a title shot again? What, when Dana White likes me enough? It's basically on when he likes me, and you know as well as I know, that's not that often. If I get the opportunity to fight for a title because he says so, then I'm going to take it. If I have to wait to take it, I'll wait to take it."

-Rashad Evans talks to MMAFighting.com and blast back at UFC President Dana White for some of White's recent comments about him, including that his first fight with Rampage was boring and he didn't want to see it again and that he was crazy for waiting for Mauricio "Shogun" Rua to heal instead of taking another fight in 2010.

Penick's Analysis: As far as sitting out is concerned, I see both sides of the argument. Rashad's got a great point about the sometimes arbitrary nature of the UFC's matchmaking for title shots, but White also makes sense in discussing the money being left on the table by Rashad during his prime by not fighting. As far as the Rampage fight goes, I don't think it was boring, but it was certainly not up to the hype. Rashad fought a smart gameplan, and there were some very entertaining moments in the fight, but as a whole it was a let down. He's now left in limbo until after UFC 128 as he wants to see if his friend Jon Jones will capture the belt before he makes his next move. And with this back and forth with White, it's possible that he finds himself further from a shot if Shogun retains the title.

ROUNDTABLE: Do the losses by Fedor and Andrei Arlovski hurt the draw for the Heavyweight Grand Prix moving forward? MMATorch staff and contributors weigh in

Fedor_Strikeforce150_62.jpg
Do the losses by Fedor and Andrei Arlovski hurt the draw for the Heavyweight Grand Prix at all?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Well, it hurts Strikeforce's ability to market to the casuals, for sure. But the beauty of the tournament structure is that the best fighter moves forward, and the matchups only get better as you move forward. So the tournament will be just fine without Arlovski and Fedor.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Considering that Strikeforce's highest rating ever came for this show, and considering that Fedor probably significantly contributed to that rating, I think it does. Arlovski, not so much.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Fedor's loss hurts the tournament, but Arlovski's doesn't at all. I like Arlovski, but he's not a big name draw anymore. The way Fedor lost, though, makes his absence in the tournament less of a bad thing. If Fedor had been narrowly edged out, or lost in a flukey way, that would have been bad. However, Fedor being dominated by Bigfoot Silva the way he was sends a big message to fans that Bigfoot is for real. It's like when the Jets beat the Patriots in the NFL playoffs this year. The Patriots not being in the next round of the playoffs wasn't as bad because of how they lost to the Jets. I think Bigfoot loses in the next round, much like the Jets did, but his performance over Fedor has upped his profile quite a bit.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I don't believe the losses of Fedor and Andrei Arlovski hurt the tournament. In a weird way, it actually helps it. It almost seems like the Pride tournament from 2005, when both Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson, heavy favorites, lost in the opening round, and opens it up for someone new to take it to the top similar to Shogun Rua in that Pride tournament. I really think this will shine the light on fighters that are highly regarded, but rarely seen, such as Antonio Silva and Alistair Overeem. For Overeem, this is a chance to solidify his claim as the best heavyweight not in the UFC, and depending how well he does in the tournament, that may not last for long.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Say what you will about Andrei Arlovski, he is a former UFC Heavyweight Champ. He is a big name and losing him from this Heavyweight Grand Prix is a huge loss. Losing Fedor is the largest blow that the Heavyweight Grand Prix could suffer. The biggest fight left is Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and that is a first round fight. I am again left asking what was Scott Coker thinking setting up the brackets this way? The simple fact of the matter is that one of the top fighters (Fabricio Werdum) left in this Grand Prix was released in November 2008 from the UFC. I am not saying there are not exciting fights left. There are great fights left, but the tournament is losing the casual MMA fan and will now be mostly watched by diehard fans.

ALVIN CARTER, MMATORCH SPECIALIST

Not really. Arlovski does not make or break the draw. Fedor a bit, but there is talk of him getting a spot as an alternate to keep buzz alive. If anything the tournament might receive more hype because the field was shaken up by his loss and it appears that anyone (hypothetically) can really win this tournament. If Overeem losses in the first round, then we might see pretty awkward draw for the rest of the tournament.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I think Fedor's loss certainly hurts the draw for future rounds. Alistair Overeem is a tremendous talent, but he doesn't have a major presence in the U.S. yet because of a lack of activity outside of Japan. Fabricio Werdum hasn't fought since beating Fedor last June, and with zero follow-up to that huge win, there's no telling whether or not he'll be a draw. The same goes for Bigfoot right now. Already his win has been downplayed, even within Strikeforce, with talk of "what if it had gone to the third round" and also of bringing Fedor back as a tournament alternate despite being thoroughly handled by Bigfoot. So his semifinal fight may not necessarily draw if they don't give him a much harder sell. With Fedor's return in this Grand Prix bringing a record number of viewers for MMA to Showtime, there's no doubt that losing him for future rounds is going to hurt. It's up to Strikeforce to better sell the rest of their field, and to make sure that they leave themselves openings if the favorites lose. That's been one thing that has left a lot to be desired with their match-making, as they have left themselves in bad spots far too often by only pushing one side of a fight, and being left searching what to do if they don't get the desired result. Hopefully they can avoid that and sell the fact that this tournament field is now wide open, and that any man can win.

UFC NEWS: Scott Jorgensen vs. Ken Stone heading to TUF 13 Finale in June

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_783.jpg
The final challenger to the WEC Bantamweight Championship will make his UFC debut this June, as Heavy.com reports that Scott Jorgensen will meet Ken Stone at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale in June.

Jorgensen worked his way to a shot at WEC Bantamweight Champ Dominick Cruz with a five fight win streak in the WEC, a streak included two "Fight of the Night" performances. But Jorgensen ran into a buzz-saw in the Champion, losing a one-sided decision on the final WEC event in December.

Stone made his WEC debut on that same card, but suffered a brutal knockout loss at the hands of former division Champion Eddie Wineland. Wineland picked Stone up against the cage and slammed him to the mat early in the first round, knocking him out cold in a very scary scene. But Stone recovered, and at 9-2 will make his UFC debut on this card as well.

The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale takes place on June 4 in Las Vegas, headlined by a lightweight bout between Clay Guida and Anthony Pettis.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a solid bantamweight fight for a free card. Jorgensen has always been an exciting fighter, and he's been in a lot of entertaining fights in the WEC. Stone is coming off a vicious loss, and this is a big fight for him. Both guys have a big opportunity in the UFC, and this will be an entertaining fight for this free card.

Lets go Bisping!...?

I cant stand Bisping therefore I am praying he wins tonight.

Here is why:

I dont see GSP / Anderson EVER happening. GSP isnt moving up, and Silva needs to go to 205 for superfights to end his career. So why do I care about Bisping?

Because if GSP wont move up, Anderson is left with no one (Ill give you Okami, but he isnt nearly as marketable) to fight at MW except...

wiat for it...

BISPING!!!

What could possibly be better than seeing Anderson Silva absolutely tool Bisping? That would be worth the $49 by itself. That would be an EPIC fight! Then Anderson can move up and face Rampage, Bones, Shogun, Thiago Silva, Rashad Evans, or maybe even Couture. Any of those fights I would buy!

Jorge Rivera on UFC 127: His Chin is Suspect, If I Catch Him I'll Knock Him Out

Michael Bisping is a big, big... Oh, sorry, got carried away there.

It's a darn catchy song folks.  Don't blame me, blame Jorge "El Conquista-Do-Re-Mi... I mean, Jorge "El Conquistador" Rivera for them catchy songs and the videos that come with them.

UFC 127 brings us a welterweight showdown between BJ Penn and John Fitch, but it seems that a lot of the attention has been driven away from the main event to the co-main event. Why? Because Jorge Rivera took Chael Sonnen's antics and took them to another level.

The Puerto Rican decendant faces none other that the poster boy for British MMA, Michael "The Count" Bisping in a middleweight scrap that has taken personal connotations.

After Rivera released a viral campaign of hilarious videos—some of them mocking the figure of Michael Bisping—most of the attention seems to have shifted from the main event to the co-main event.

It is no secret that "The Count" has not taken how Rivera has promoted this fight lightly.

We know that after a very intense stare-down and some choice words from the Brit after the pre-fight press conference, it is now personal.

Rivera sat down for a conference call with media from Puerto Rico on Thursday and here are some of the things he said.

When asked if he thought he was ahead of Bisping in the striking:

Jorge Rivera: "I think I hit a lot harder than he does, and I think his chin is suspect.  If I catch him, I'll knock him out."

When asked if he was looking to upset the crowd and if he knew he wasn't the fan favorite:

"I don't know about that. I get a bunch of people stopping me on the street telling me how much they don't like him and telling me 'please, know him out.' To be honest, I don't care, the crowd that I worry about the most is the crowd at home, you know—my mother and father, my family.

"And the people in Puerto Rico you know, I'm super excited to make you people proud.  That's where my family comes from, that's where my brother comes from, I'm extremely proud to be Puerto Rican.

"When I was growing up in the streets I always made sure I never forget that I was Puerto Rican, and now that I'm grown, I want to make damned sure I never forget."

When asked what worried him the most about Bisping's style and where did he visualize the fight going (standing or ground):

"Everyone has a game plan coming into a fight, but once the fight starts, the plan is out the window. I'm ready to go anywhere with him. I'd like to stand with him, but if he goes to the ground, I am more than ready to go to the ground with him.

"I'm not afraid of him, wherever he wants to take the fight, we fight."

When asked by The MMA Truth about Bisping trying to write him off as a worthy opponent because of his age (Jorge Rivera is 38 years of age), how confident is he in his capabilities to control Bisping, and what his opinion is about Bisping's comments:

"To tell you the truth, I don't care. If he thinks he's going to beat me because I'm almost 40, he is mistaken. Age has nothing to do with this fight.

"I've said it before and I will say it again—I am prepared for him. For the way he fights, for the way he likes to run his mouth, everything.

"Let's see that on Saturday."

The MMA Truth - "Jorge, he [Bisping] expresses terrible anger because of the videos and stuff, but then he contradicts himself saying you haven't gotten into his head, but he really is angry and it's actually the first time we see him so emotional for a fight.

"But now I ask you, how much could it weigh in your head, how much pressure could you feel now that you've created all this viral video campaign against him to win? There must be pressure now to deliver what has been promised."

"No, no, for me there is no pressure, I'm not doing that to myself. I just have to go in and fight. He has the pressure, he is 32, he is in the top 10, he is saying I'm an old guy.  I have no pressure, I just have to go in there and knock him out."

"And do you think he will walk in the Octagon feeling that pressure?"

"Of course! He's telling people I'm old and that I don't belong in there with him.  When I hit him with my right hand he will feel it, and you will see him run!"

When asked what his opinion was on Michael Bisping requesting that his [Jorge's] coach was not be let into the weigh-in and what really happened there:

"He doesn't control that. (laughs) I actually find that interesting, I mean, he asked for my cornerman not to be in the corner for the weigh-ins. This is the funny part. He [Bisping] says that those videos don't get to him yet he doesn't want the guy that played him in the videos there. (laughs)

"Everything he does is a contradiction, so it's cool. We know it worked, we know the campaign worked, now I just have to go out there and execute a game plan, and put him away.  I'm not looking to get a decision with him, I want to finish him.

"I'm coming man!"

Now remember folks, Jorge's coach is the guy that plays Bisping in the videos.  Rivera made clear, his cornerman will be right there beside him at the weigh-ins.

The conference call ends with some inspirational words from my friend Josué Ríos from http://mixedmartialartspr.com:

"I just want to tell Jorge that we feel very happy for him and we congratulate him on everything he's done.  That we consider him an ambassador of MMA for all the Latin community, especially the People from Puerto Rico.

"We just want to let you know, we have a huge UFC viewing party with Cain Velasquez who will be here for Jorge's fight.  This is a fight that all of Puerto Rico will be watching.

"We know it is important for you to have the back up from Puerto Rico, because even though you live in Boston, I know and we know you know that you are Puertorrican and you feel proud about it.  You will make us proud in this fight."

"Thank you man. I'm extremely proud. Puerto Rico is my blood, it's where my family comes from, I'm extremely proud of that, extremely greatful.

"I want to go back to Puerto Rico, if they want me there, I'll be more than happy to go there and teach and do whatever I can do to make the Puerto Rican fighters the best.

"I want to go there and I want to continue to give back to them!"

--------------

We at The MMA Truth, and all of Puerto Rico, want to wish the best of the best of the best in this fight to Jorge "El Conquistador" Rivera, but most importantly, in life!

Looking forward to have you back in your (and mine) Island.

Thanks for reading.

UFC QUOTABLES: Ben Rothwell says he needs to become a contender or find something else to do with his life

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_788.jpg
"I kind of like that [I've had an extended layoff], because maybe it means I'll get a fresh start. People might not just look at me like, 'here's this can who got beat up by Cain [Velasquez] and then won a boring decision against Gilbert Yvel.' Good. Give me a year off, forget all that, and let me come back as something new. Because this is it, man. I've got to come back, do something exciting, become a contender, or else I need to think about something else to do with my life...

A loss is a loss. I lost to some guys I shouldn't have. I lost to arguably the best Andrei Arlovski and I lost to the best heavyweight in the world right now in Cain. But it's still a loss.

Having ten or more fights in the UFC, to me, is a big deal. I've got two now. If you have ten fights where you had to win just to keep getting invited back, that means something. That's a real UFC veteran. You have guys saying, 'Oh, I fought in the UFC.' Yeah, you fought one time and lost. Don't tell anyone that anymore. But if you look at a guy like Chris Lytle, I love guys like that. That's a real UFC veteran. That's a big deal, and I would like to be able to walk away from the sport being able to say that about myself."

-Ben Rothwell talks to MMAFighting.com about his extended injury layoff and his goals for his UFC career.

Penick's Analysis: The loss to Velasquez isn't anything to be ashamed of, and he lost to Arlovski before Arlovski began his downhill slide. But despite those two losses, he's got one of the better records overall in the heavyweight division, and has been extremely successful since 2005. There are several heavyweights that Rothwell will be successful against, but I don't know that he'll get to his goal of becoming a contender. When he's able to return he can still have exciting fights, and if he can win more than he loses he'll keep himself on the UFC's heavyweight roster and make a run for his ten fights in the organization.

PIC OF THE DAY: Rich Franklin's lost bet dragon tattoo

Rich Franklin has posted pictures of his "tattoo" that he got when he lost his fight to Forrest Griffin at UFC 126. But all is well, the hideous dragon will not be permanent, as Franklin went with a loophole in the bet. Here's what he posted on his official site (pictures below):

"My ?Henna? Tattoo..Ok, nobody said it had to be REAL:-) Oh, and Forrest said he would pay for the removal so he owes me a bar of soap!"

Well played, Rich.

STRIKEFORCE QUOTABLES: Gilbert Melendez - "I really truly believe I'm the No. 1 fighter in the world"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_93.png
"There's a couple of things to weigh out with Strikeforce. Strikeforce is a great organization, and they've taken care of me really well. Everyone knows the UFC is the biggest organization out there, branding yourself and getting your name out there, it's no secret that they're the best. There wasn't much to weigh out. These agreements are structured for a champion not easily to walk away, but there was things to debate about with Strikeforce here and there.

But at the end of the day I came to the conclusion that it was a great deal on the table and they showed how much I mean to the organization. At the end of the day I'm pretty happy with my deal and yes I'm getting taken care of pretty well

I think it's important for me to dominate now. I really truly believe I'm the No. 1 fighter in the world, and the only way I'm going to get that spot is by dominating. I can't have these draws or get knocked down or almost lose, I need to completely dominate everyone out there. I think I'm ready to do that. I'm going to try to make a statement, and that's how I'm going to do it."

-Gilbert Melendez talks to MMAWeekly.com about why he re-signed with Strikeforce and what he plans to do to keep himself in the conversation as the best lightweight in the world.

Penick's Analysis: Melendez currently holds the mantle as the "best lightweight not in the UFC," (although Eddie Alvarez and Bellator might argue otherwise), but despite his belief that he's the best in the world he won't have an opportunity to prove that in Strikeforce. There are plenty of entertaining and exciting fights for him to have in Strikeforce and in Japan, and he should do just what he says he wants to in dominating most of them. But he's still not facing the best competition in the division. Not by a long shot, and though it's a cliche sometimes to be the best you do need to beat the best. That holds true very much in this lightweight division that is so stacked with talent, because the UFC's roster, especially at the top, is constantly being matched up against elite talent. Melendez is an elite level fighter, and he very well could beat some of the top guys in the UFC, but until he's facing that level of competition on a regular basis no one outside of his camp and Strikeforce is going to think of him as the #1 lightweight in the world.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Meisha Tate injured, Liz Carmouche gets shot at Marloes Coenen in Columbus

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_97.png
Next Saturday's Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson event has taken a blow, as Women's 135 lb. number one contender Meisha Tate has been forced out of her title bout against Marloes Coenen.

In her place steps 5-0 Liz Carmouche, who gets a shot at the belt in her third Strikeforce appearance.

The organization announced the change on Wednesday, citing a knee injury to Tate suffered in training.

Off the heels of a stoppage victory over Jan Finney in November at Strikeforce Challengers 12, Carmouche steps in on a week and a half's notice to face the Champ.

Coenen looks to win her second fight in the 135 lb. division, the first coming when she captured the belt from Sarah Kaufman in October.

Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson takes place from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on March 5, and airs live on Showtime.

Penick's Analysis: This is a crappy blow to this card. Tate-Coenen looked to be an excellent matchup, and now Carmouche steps in for a five round fight on less than two week's notice. That doesn't have the makings of a really compelling title fight, and it's a really unfortunate turn of events for the card. Still, there are entertaining matchups on the card, and the main event should be an excellent title fight at 205 lbs., but this loss certainly hurts.

UFC NEWS: Jorge Santiago signs multi-fight contract to return to UFC

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jorge_Santiago_2.jpeg
Jorge Santiago has put pen to paper and is now signed with the UFC for a multi-fight deal, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.

Santiago's return to the UFC was reported over the weekend, but the Sengoku Middleweight Champion had not officially signed his contract until this week.

Santiago appeared three times for the UFC in 2006, but notched only a 1-2 record in that time, with two knockout losses to Chris Leben and Alan Belcher. However, he's gone 12-1 since the loss to Belcher, and returns to the UFC on the heels of one of the best fights of all of 2010 last summer.

He is rumored to be meeting Brian Stann at UFC 130 in his return, though that bout has not yet been signed.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: It's hard to know just how much better Santiago is than when he first fought in the UFC. We've seen it time and time again that fighters having a lot of success in Japan have not necessarily been able to translate that into success in the U.S., so it could be that he's gotten a lot better, or that he's just looked better against a lower level of competition. Either way, Brian Stann marks an extremely tough fighter to welcome him back, and makes for an interesting stylistic matchup. Santiago's return is exciting, though, and even if he loses, it's sure to be in a fun and entertaining fight.

BELLATOR NEWS: Jimmy Smith signs multi-year extension as commentator

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_241.jpg
Bellator will keep their announce team intact after all.

It was looking very much like they'd return in season four without Jimmy Smith, as he stated back in December that he had been approached with an "unacceptable" offer and didn't feel he'd be back. But now, MMAFighting.com reports that Smith has re-signed with the organization with a new three-year deal, confirmed by Bellator CEO and founder Bjorn Rebney.

"Jimmy is the best in the business, and he and Sean are a spectacular team," Rebney said. "There were some hurdles to make a deal happen, but we're happy to get it done, and absolutely thrilled to have Jimmy back."

"This team will be together for years to come. We have a pure play-by-play guy and color guy, and I think what we have right now is the best announcing team in the sport."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I'm glad to hear this news, as I liked this team together over the last two seasons. Bellator came back with what had to have been a much better offer than Smith was initially approached with, and now the team will stick together for the duration of Bellator's current deal with MTV2.

UFC NEWS: Cub Swanson injured, UFC searching for replacement against Erik Koch at UFC on Versus 3

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_798.jpg
Next week's UFC on Versus 3 card has suffered a blow to the event, as Cub Swanson has suffered an undisclosed injury that has forced him out of a bout with Erik Koch, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

The fight was supposed to take place on the undercard of the event, taking place on March 3 from the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., and the UFC is looking for a late replacement to meet Koch on extremely short notice.

Both fighters were set to make their UFC debut on this event after successful stints in sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting. Swanson went 5-3 with three "Fight of the Night" bonuses throughout his time in the organization, and was set to enter off of a win over Mackens Semerzier before this injury setback.

22-year-old Koch now hopes the UFC can find a replacement so his debut stays on track. The 11-1 professional's only loss came at the hands of undefeated powerhouse Chad Mendes, and his three impressive wins in the WEC left an impression, especially his most recent win over Francisco Rivera in November at WEC 52.

The UFC on Versus 3 card is headlined by the welterweight bout between Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a really unfortunate blow to this card just a week out from the event. This was the most exciting fight on the night's preliminary card, and it was going to be a good test for both Koch and Swanson. If the UFC can find someone to step up on short notice then that's great, but if not hopefully they can get Koch back onto another card in short order.

UFC QUOTABLES: Lyoto Machida - "If I'm not pleasing the fans anymore, the UFC won't feel sorry for me"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MachidaLyoto_CG150_30.jpg
"The expectations are the best. We know Randy Couture is a great champion, a guy who helped to build the sport as it is, and it's a great pleasure to have this fight on my resume, because I'll be part of Randy Couture?s history on the sport. He added much to MMA. I believe we can win, we have many weapons. Despite he?s on a certain age, he's tough and experienced, and he's been fighting guys like Minotauro, and he did tough fights and he's tough for anyone...

Of course [a loss could lead to my release]. UFC considers the incomes a lot, the profits, and if I'm not pleasing the fans anymore, they won't feel sorry for me. That?s why I've always invested on me a lot, and it won't be any different now. If I did a lot, I'll do a lot more now. I'll give my best trying to win. If I have to bring the best professionals, I will."

-Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida talks to Tatame.com about his upcoming fight with Randy Couture at UFC 129 and the realization that a third straight loss or a poor performance could certainly lead to him being cut from the organization.

Penick's Analysis: I don't think the UFC would cut him with a loss to Couture, as despite it being three straight losses they will have all come against champions in the division. However, if he loses in a really boring fight, it's definitely a possibility. But after losing two straight fights, Machida should know he really needs to come out with an impressive fight at UFC 129 in front of 55,000 fans in attendance.

Chicago Bulls: Grading Their Chances Against Eastern Conference Playoff Teams

With all the movement of superstars from the West to the East, the Eastern Conference playoff picture has perhaps never looked this exciting. With the Knicks trade for Carmelo Anthony and the Nets’ trade for Deron Williams, the first seven spots in the Eastern Conference playoff picture seem to be set for at least the foreseeable future.

However, due to an improved East, no team is going to be able to dominate the conference and run all the way to the finals. Noting that, how do the Bulls match up against the teams looking at a playoff spot in the East?

UFC NEWS: Phil Davis gets Jason Brilz at UFC 129 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_787.jpg
Phil Davis will still get an opportunity to fight in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto this April, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he will now meet Jason Brilz on the UFC 129 card.

Davis was originally scheduled to meet Matt Hamill on the card, but Hamill was pulled out of the card to replace Thiago Silva against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 130 in May. Davis brings an undefeated 8-0 record into this bout, including four straight wins in the UFC. In his last bout, Davis pulled off an impressive modified hammerlock on Tim Boetsch to earn his third career submission victory.

Brilz returns for the first time since his split decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 114 last May. Brilz was scheduled to return in November, but an injury kept him on the sidelines. With an 18-3-1 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the UFC, Brilz will be looking to make a bigger statement than in his performance against "Lil Nog."

UFC 129 takes place from the Rogers Centre on April 30, headlined by the Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a very good replacement fight with Hamill being removed. Brilz looked great against Nogueira in a losing effort last year, a fight many believed he should have won, so he makes a very solid opponent for Davis here. Davis is an exciting light heavyweight prospect, and this is another big opportunity for him to impress on the biggest stage the UFC has had to date.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Andrei Arlovski's coach Greg Jackson doesn't think he has a glass chin, believes he's making fundamental mistakes in recent losses

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

AndreiArlovskiCRG_150_10.jpg
Andrei Arlovski has had a rough stretch over the last couple of years. After a five fight winning streak into his bout with Fedor Emelianenko in January in 2009, he's lost four fights in a row, three of which have come by knockout or TKO. But despite what has been a labeled a "glass chin" with his recent losses, Arlovski's new coach Greg Jackson doesn't buy into that talk.

"I think he?s going to come back a better fighter,? Jackson said in an interview with Sherdog.com. ?You have to remember I?m a diehard optimist. It?s really hard to discourage me or tell me it shouldn?t be done or it can?t be done. I?m a guy that I think I know what to do to fix it. I?m going to try everything I can to do that."

"He kind of hesitated standing in front of [Kharitonov] and was grabbing around the neck and doing stuff that we hadn?t planned. For me, that?s part of the learning process. It didn?t go our way because we made some fundamental mistakes that we weren?t supposed to make. Of course you don?t want to stand in front of Kharitonov no matter who you are. He?s got bombs in either of those hands of his. We were doing very, very well following the game plan and we kind of had a lapse."

For Jackson, he believes it's all about the fundamentals, and he believes Arlovski has been making a similar mistake in each of his recent losses.

"I'm really identifying the mistake. It went a little deeper than I thought it did,? Jackson said. "Identifying that mistake and changing what we do there is going to be a big, important factor. I don't think he has a weak chin. I think he's fighting in a heavyweight division where these guys would knock down a house if they hit it."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: While Jackson's take on the situation may be accurate, it doesn't change the fact that he's taken some ridiculously brutal losses over his career. The knockout he took against Kharitonov was scary, and the more beatings he takes the more likely he is to have problems later in life. I personally don't want to see him take any more punishment, the same way I didn't want to see Chuck Liddell take more punishment after his numerous knockout losses. It's sounding like he'll continue on fighting, and that is just a little disappointing.
