Aldo defends belt in UFC 129 five-round war

Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick had a lot to live up to after the excellent fights that made up UFC 129. They delivered in a five-round decision that ended with Aldo keeping the UFC featherweight belt, with him winning 48-45, 48-46 and 49-46. (The score read after the fight of 50-43, 48-46, 49-46 was a miscalculation.)

Aldo started with his trademark leg kicks early, landing several before the first minute of the fight was up. Hominick returned a few strikes, but had a hard time getting close enough to land anything of consequence. Aldo then used a takedown that Hominick tried to turn into an armbar. Aldo got out of it easily and then used the close proximity to land short strikes. The repeated elbows opened a cut under Hominick's eye. They were stood up by referee John McCarthy with 30 seconds left in the round, only for Aldo to get another takedown.

By the second round, Hominick had a lump on his forehead and a cut under his eye, but still came out with several body shots. Hominick had an easier time landing strikes and avoiding Aldo's. He tagged Aldo with several jabs before Aldo got a takedown. Hominick grabbed onto Aldo's arms to try to force a stand-up, and it worked. Back on their feet, Hominick landed a leg kick but again, Aldo got the takedown.

Between rounds, Hominick's corner told him that Aldo was fading. As the two came out in the third, Aldo was able to land leg kicks, but Hominick was getting the better of striking. He stopped Aldo's takedown attempt and was able to land jabs. A cut underneath Aldo's eye opened as Hominick found his rhythm on his feet.

But that's when Aldo took back the momentum. He tagged Hominick, knocking him to the ground with a right hook followed by a left hook, then followed up with several punches on the ground. Aldo was unable to finish Hominick off, but the damage for the round was done.

Heading into the championship rounds, Hominick's left eye was swollen, and he had a cut under his right. Aldo returned to the leg kick and used it to set up knees and and punches to begin the fourth round. Finally, the leg kicks started to add up, as Hominick began to limp. Though Aldo's foot movement wasn't impressive, his head movement was. Because of that, he was able to avoid Hominick's strikes.

He knocked Hominick down again, then followed up with another series of ground strikes. Hominick sustained a baseball-sized bump on his head. He struggled underneath Aldo, and was so beat up. Referee John McCarthy stopped the bout to call in a doctor to look at it, but the doctor let the fight continue.

With the short time left in the round, Aldo finished with another takedown. The doctor again checked Hominick between rounds, who gave him a more extensive exam. Again, the fight was allowed to continue.

In the fifth round, Aldo landed another leg strike before Hominick and his head hematoma got a takedown. As a cut on his cheek leaked onto Aldo's face, Hominick was able to land several short punches and elbows. Aldo looked exhausted, but held on until the bell rang.

When the bell rang, Hominick did his trademark push-ups. Aldo looked over and did the same. The two laughed and congratulated each other on the fight. Aldo was impressed by his opponent, calling him a tough fighter.

And that's exactly what Hominick proved himself to be. He didn't come away with the win, but he did earn the respect of every person who watched the bout.

UFC 129 CONTESTS: Confidence Pick and Betting Games are LIVE

UFC_129_poster_180_20_1.jpg
By Rich Hansen, MMA Torch Columnist

I will apologize in advance for the lack of prose, but somehow UFC 129, and the MMA Torch contests associated with the event, has sneaked up on me. So, short and sweet, Daniel Moore will be facing off against Danny Mellor for the Betting Game title, and Daniel Moore will be picking against Shaun Godric Louis for the Confidence Picks title.

Don?t worry; I?ll be much more verbose when I post the results on Sunday. I may also have a thought on Minnesota drafting Christian Ponder with the 12th pick in the draft. The word, "Hahahaha," may be involved in that hypothetical commentary...

Also, I have listed full rules for both games below. There are no changes to the rules, but I figured they should all be listed in one place. Any questions, please ask.

All entries are due to me by 4 PM CDT (9 PM GMT) on Saturday April 30. For reference, the PPV portion of the event begins at 8 PM CDT.

BETTING LINES

So, with no further ado, here are the lines we?re using, courtesy of bodog.com:

Jake Shields : +300

Jose Aldo: -550
Mark Hominick: +350

Vladimir Matyushenko: -115
Jason Brilz: -115

Lyoto Machida: -325
Randy Couture: +250

Benson Henderson: -145
Mark Bocek: +115

Rory MacDonald: -120
Nathan Diaz: -110

Jake Ellenberger: -200
Sean Pierson: +160

Claude Patrick : -160
Daniel Roberts: +130

Ivan Menjivar: -135
Charlie Valencia: +105

CONFIDENCE PICKS GAME RULES

NOTE: A player does not need to play both games during each event. Players may choose to submit an entry for one game or the other, or for both, at their own choosing.

Assign a number from 1 through 12 (if a 12 fight card, 1 through 11 if a 11 fight card, etc.), with the highest number going to the fighter you are most confident in winning. Also list your prediction for method of victory, along with the round (or decision if you predict a decision)

Using UFC 124 as a template, here is how simple an entry will look:

Georges St-Pierre ? 11 - decision
Thiago Alves - 10 - KO2
Jim Miller - 9 - decision
Stefan Struve - 8 - KO1
Ricardo Almeida - 7 - sub3
Mark Bocek - 6 - sub2
Joe Stevenson - 5 - decision
Dan Miller - 4 - decision
Rafael Natal - 3 - decsion
Matt Riddle - 2 - KO1
John Makdessi - 1 - decision

The first tie-breaker is the sum of confidence points. Using the example above, a Georges St-Pierre victory would earn 11 points, Thiago Alves winning would earn 10 points, etc.

If two participants earn the same number of confidence points, the next tie-breaker will be total number of winners predicted. If Player A earns 40 points on 7 winning picks, and if Player B earns 40 points on 6 winning picks, Player A would be declared the winner.

The next tie-breaker is the number of victory methods predicted correctly. Next would be predicted rounds of victory.

If both players are still tied at this point, both players will be declared winner, and they will face off again, along with the winner of the pool (to be described later), at the next event in a three way dance.

There is no money being wagered in this game, and there are no prizes, short of bragging rights.

BETTING GAME RULES

1.) Every player has $1000 of fake, imaginary, theoretical, play money to wager on each event. This is not a real money game, it is strictly for fun.

2.) Players must place a bet of at least $50, but not more than $500, on each of 3 or more different fighters. Bets may be in any denomination, as long as the amount falls in the range of $50 - $500.

3.) Players may also place a parlay bet. A parlay bet is a bet placed on multiple fighters. All fighters in the parlay must win their fights in order for the parlay to pay off. Parlay bets pay off at a higher rate than a bet on a single fighter. The parlay bet may be placed on either 2 or on 3 fighters.

4.) The minimum parlay bet is $50. The maximum parlay bet is $200. This money comes out of the $1000 allotted to each player. The parlay bet is not separate from the $1000 budget. A player is not required to play a parlay bet. The maximum number of parlay bets a player may wager is one.

5.) Whether or not a player chooses to place a parlay bet, the player must still place at least three straight bets ie: It is not legal to place two bets on individual fighters and one parlay bet. No entry is considered valid unless there are a minimum of 3 straight bets placed on individual fighters.

6.) If a fight ends in a draw, any money bet on said fighter will be refunded, with no fake money commission taken. If a fighter in a 3-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 3-fighter parlay will be treated as a 2-fighter parlay. If a fighter in a 2-fighter parlay is involved in a draw, that fighter will be removed from the parlay and the 2-fighter parlay will be treated as a straight bet on the remaining fighter.

Instructions on how to read and utilize the betting lines

7.) If a fighter has a positive number such as +150 next to his name, he is the underdog, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a higher rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $150 net profit for every $100 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $750. If a player bets $500 on a +150 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.

8.) If a fighter has a negative number such as -200 next to his name, he is the favorite, which means a successful bet on that fighter will pay off at a lower rate. That means that if the fighter wins, the bet will payout $100 net profit for every $200 bet on him. If a player were to bet $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter wins, the player will profit $250. If a player bets $500 on a -200 fighter, and the fighter loses, the player will lose his $500 bet.

Structure for each game

9.) For each UFC numbered event, both the Confidence Picks and Betting Game will feature a champion and a challenger facing off against one another. The winner of the head to head battle will be declared the reigning champion.

10.) All other players for each UFC numbered event will compete against each other for the right to face off against the reigning champion at the next UFC numbered event. This is known as The Pool.

11.) As games administrator, I have the subjective right to eliminate any entry for any reason I deem worthy.

12.) Entries may be submitted via email (mmatorchrich@gmail.com), or on the comment section of this post. Email is the preferred method, because if a player posts an invalid entry, I have no way to make sure I can get hold of the player so that it may be corrected. Please, under no circumstances should you both email and post on the board your entry. One or the other please, preferably email.

13.) Any questions, please email me and ask. There are no new rules in this list of rules. I just wanted to have everything listed together. But that said, if you have a question, just ask.

Most important rule

14.) If you mention being a Packer fan, you will be banned. Try me. Even in the offseason, I hate you.

Randy Couture says UFC 129 bout with Lyoto Machida will be his last

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

CoutureRandy_210_48.jpg
Though UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture has "retired" from MMA competition twice before, the 47-year-old legend now says he's sticking to his guns, and this month's UFC 129 bout with Lyoto Machida will be his last.

"I believe this is my last fight," Couture said in comments made to ESPN's Josh Gross. "I know the UFC is probably going to have other ideas, especially with acquiring Strikeforce and all that. They're probably going to try to draw me into another fight but I don't think that's going to happen. I want to stick to my guns and this is the last one."

Couture's previous retirements came after his UFC 57 loss to Chuck Liddell and then in late 2007 when the UFC failed to acquire Fedor Emelianenko he declared his retirement in an attempt to set up
a fight with "The Last Emperor" outside of the organization. In both instances he returned to action in the UFC, but with a budding acting career gaining steam and more options being made available to him there, he says this time it's for real and he wants to go out on his own terms.

"I will miss the competition immensely but I want to go out on my terms," he said. "I want to go out when I think it's time to go out and not because I lost this fight or lost that fight or because I had an injury that precludes me from training the way I want to train.

"I want to make the decision on my own."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This isn't at all surprising, and it's something he's hinted at and even said aloud prior to this, but these statements are the most definitive comment he's made on the subject. At 47, no one will have anything negative to say about him hanging up the gloves. He's accomplished so much already in his career, and has been one of the faces of the UFC for a long time. The fact that he hasn't suffered numerous losses in a row to finish out his career will be something he can hang his hat on, as even a loss in his final fight isn't a slight on him or his career. Lyoto Machida was the champion of this division just last year, and losing a fight to him won't in any way affect Couture's legacy as a fighter; that's been established for a long time. But win or lose, this is the way to go out if you're Couture, and while fans will be sad to see him go, it's simply time. UFC 129 will be one last attempt to prove he can still hang with anyone, and even if he pulls off the upset, that will be more than enough.

UPDATE: During a media conference call on Tuesday, Couture reiterated his stance, and made it clear this was a decision a long time in the making. Said Couture, "It's been an ongoing transition for me. I kind of want to go out on my own terms and decide when enough is enough. I think that time has come... I think it's time to focus on the other things I have going in my life after the fight."

Boxer Jeff Lacy responds to call out from camp of Strikeforce Welterweight Champ Nick Diaz

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_143.png
Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz is eying a move to the boxing ring this year, and his camp said late last week they're looking at former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy as his possible opponent.

Lacy has responded to the Diaz camp's call out with a clear message: be careful what you wish for.

"Honestly, I was a little stunned," Lacy said of the call-out in a statement from his camp. "Nick has accomplished a great deal in mixed martial arts and is certainly one of the best in the sport. But getting in the ring with me for a boxing match is a path he needs to be very wary of taking. I'm willing to put it all on the line anytime, anywhere!"

Diaz said last week to HDNet's Inside MMA program that he's not sure how much of a future he has in MMA, and believes the money hasn't been right for him while expecting bigger paydays in a boxing ring. Lacy concurred with the money issue, and said as long as the price is right for them both, he's ready for the fight.

?For the right price, I'm more than interested in heading to his turf and put my fist in his mouth and silencing him."

Lacy holds a professional boxing record of 25-4 with one no contest. He won the IBF super middleweight title in 2004 and defended it four times before a one-sided decision loss to Joe Calzaghe in 2006. However, Lacy has lost his last two fights, most recently by decision last December.

NFL Draft 2011: After First Three Rounds, Is Belichick Still a Genius?

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is considered a mastermind on the field but is often praised for the schemes he commits on Draft day. The "hoodie" always has a way of drafting players some of us have never even heard of on draft day, getting steals in the later rounds, and stockpiling future draft picks for the Patriots year after year.

After the first three rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft, Belichick has managed to do all three.

Canada loves Couture so much, it made him into a truck

Yahoo! Sports' newest blog Eh Game spotted one particular downer to Randy Couture's retirement. It'll mean an end to his relationship with the Canadian National Lacrosse League team the Edmonton Rush.

But don't freak out Rush fans you'll still have a piece of Couture in 2011.

Eh Game's Andrew McKay says Rush owner Bruce Urban doesn't want to let go of Couture, so at the Capital Monster Truck Show in July at Rexall Place, Couture will be a truck. That is cool.

It's also a big positive for MMA. We've been searching for a good story involving a monster truck. The last time a big rig and fighter were mentioned in the same sentence came after Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's binge on energy drink.

Couture and his chain of gyms, Xtreme Couture, have worked together with the Rush since 2009. During his recent fights, Couture wore the Rush logo on his shorts while the lacrosse players wore the gym's logo on their uniforms. Couture, with that Rush logo in place, is expected to close out his career tomorrow night at UFC 129 against Lyoto Machida.

You can watch UFC 129 on PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) right here on Yahoo! Sports.

NFL Draft 2011: Why Ryan Mallett Is the New England Patriots' QB of the Future

Ryan Mallett watched as the first two and half rounds of the 2011 NFL draft passed him by. Six quarterbacks came off the board ahead of him and the further we went along the further our memories strayed from the talk of Mallett being the No. 1 overall pick.

But maybe it was all for the best.

Maybe Mallett's slide put him in exactly the position he needed to be: behind New England's Tom Brady.

The Patriots selected the Arkansas quarterback with the 74th overall pick and logic dictates this story ends one of two ways.

We'll look back on this day and point toward the brilliance of New England's front office and draft war room or we'll shrug our shoulders over a failed third-round pick.

The gamble was minimal at best and one the Patriots would take any day of the week.

Why? Because when Brady finally hangs up his shoes Mallett will have his day. Simply put, he's probably the future of the organization.

UFC veterans Jens Pulver and Drew McFedries will head up the next Titan Fighting Championships event on HDNet on May 27, the organization announced today.

"Our first two events on HDNet were met with both praise from critics and fans alike. Titan Fighting 18 will be a continuation of our formula for Titan Fighting 16 and 17 with a mix of nationally recognized names and rising prospects," said Titan Fighting CEO Joe Kelly. "Pulver and McFedries will not be the only national headliners on this show as we are completing negotiations for two other high profile fights. In short, Titan Fighting 18 will be our deepest show in history."

Pulver, the UFC's first ever lightweight champion, is attempting to find some resurgence to his career, coming into the event on a two fight win streak after losing six straight fights and eight out of nine from 2006-2010. He'll meet 10-2 Iowa pro Mike Powell in a featherweight fight on the card, which takes place from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

"The Kansas City MMA scene has a deep appreciation of former UFC champions. Tim Sylvia was well received when he fought at Memorial Hall in January and Jens is revered by many fight fans in this area so we?re excited to be bringing him into Titan having won his last two fights," Kelly said.

McFedries returned to action at Titan Fighting Championships 16 in January for the first time since being released from the UFC in September of 2009. The near ten year veteran of the sport is 5-5 over his last ten fights. All but one of his nine career victories has come by stoppage. He'll meet 6-2 middleweight Darryl Cobb on the card.

"Drew vs. Darryl is going to be a tremendous standup war," Kelly said. "McFedries has very polished boxing for a mixed martial artist while Darryl's Muay Thai skills are excellent. Both guys know how to bring it in the cage and Memorial Hall will come alive for this fight."

UFC 129's Ben Henderson - "Mark Bocek can be the best jiu jitsu guy at lightweight; I want to be the best fighter"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ben_Henderson_1.jpeg
Ben "Smooth" Henderson had his fair share of exciting moments in the UFC's former sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting, ending his time in the blue cage in an epic five round title fight with Anthony Pettis in the main event of that organization's last-ever fight card last December. Now, with the WEC merging into the UFC at the end of last year, Henderson finally gets his opportunity to step into the Octagon when he faces Mark Bocek next week at UFC 129.

Going from headlining a WEC event in front of 6,300 people in Glendale, Arizona to making his UFC debut in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto, Henderson is doing what he can to prepare for the crowd, but at the end of the day he's simply thankful for the opportunity to be a part of such a historic event.

"I've been truly blessed by god for all my life, and I consider this a blessing," Henderson told MMATorch on Wednesday. "It's a great opportunity for me to go out there and showcase my skills in front of what's guaranteed to be a record-setting crowd at the Rogers Centre, and what's [likely] going to be a record-setting [event for] pay-per-view buys, and I'm just thankful to the UFC brass for giving me this chance."

Henderson says they've been doing what they can to prepare for what is sure to be a crazy crowd at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. He's fought in front of the bright lights before, but never has he experienced anything like what he'll see on this card and in this venue. For Henderson, the important thing is to not get worried about the distractions and simply focus on the task at hand.

"We're aware of [the difference in atmosphere for this event]," he said. "John Crouch, my head MMA trainer and jiu jitsu instructor, he's a really smart guy. We're going to be well prepared for [the crowd]. It's hard to emulate that or recreate that, but we've tried as much as possible in our training sessions. Turn the volume up on the stereo real loud, have everyone yell as I tried to listen to his voice in particular out of the whole crowd.

"It is new [being in the UFC]. I did [take part] in some pretty big moments, some pretty historic moments in the WEC, [but] this is a whole new level. I think for me the key is to go out and do what I normally do, go out there and fight, do whatever it takes to get my hand raised. I just focus on that, focus on the fight itself. I try not to worry too much about the crowd, about the booing or whatever else is going on. I just worry about the fight, and normally, for the most part, my fights take care of themselves."

Following a UFC 124 submission win over Dustin Hazelett - his fourth submission win over his last five fights - Mark Bocek declared that he had the best jiu jitsu game in the lightweight division. Henderson himself is a submission specialist, picking up eight of his 12 career wins by form of submission, but he says he's not after that moniker.

"I think that if Mark Bocek wants to be known as the best jiu jitsu guy in the lightweight division, that's fine by me. I just want to be known as the best fighter," Henderson said. "He can be the best jiu jitsu guy, it doesn't really concern me too much. I'm going to go out there and do what I always do, and that's whatever it takes."

Henderson is well aware of the ground threat that Bocek presents, and with a hostile pro-Bocek crowd in Toronto facing him, Henderson knows what he needs to be aware of. At the same time, he says he's more than willing to go wherever the fight needs to go in order for him to pick up the win.

"I definitely have to be aware of his submissions," he said. "Not [just that], but his wrestling and his clock-eating abilities. He's known for getting on top of guys and wearing them down and wearing them down and wearing them down. He's actively working, he's trying to do stuff, but it takes him three and a half minutes to do whatever he's trying to do and then he's already taken up a large chunk of the clock. So we're definitely going to stay aware of his jiu jitsu game but also his clock-eating abilities.

"I'm absolutely comfortable wherever this fight goes. If we stay standing, if we're up against the fence, if we're on the ground, if we're doing whatever it doesn't matter to me. I'm completely comfortable in any position in the Octagon."

Coming from the WEC, Henderson knows full well the stigma that had been attached to him and his fellow colleagues in the sister promotion's lightweight division. While he has fond memories of his stint in the WEC, and knows it's the place that really introduced him to the MMA world for the first time, he's now ready to see just what he can do against the top tier of the lightweight division in the UFC.

"Overall the whole experience of the WEC was really awesome. I got to go to a bunch of big fights, I got to take part in a bunch of big fights... It was the first place where I got to be known on a national and international level. [Now, coming over to the UFC, the stigma against WEC lightweights is] not the biggest deal to me, but it is something I have taken mental notes on and
I am aware of. I am aware that former WEC fighters against UFC fighters are now 3-3 [inside the Octagon].

"For me it's been a long time coming, because for a longtime I had to hear about and was questioned by the media, the journalists, the fans and the critics, hearing about how WEC fighters would stack up in the UFC and how we were [supposedly] second-class fighters to the UFC guys. For the longest time my only answer was to say 'who knows, we'll see.' And now we get to find out once we actually get into the UFC and get into the cage, there's no point in talking about it. Who can predict the future? One way to find out is to actually get in there. And I'm excited because now it's my chance to get in there. It's a good question, let's find out how I stack up against some of those upper tier UFC lightweight guys."

Henderson is a man of faith, and you won't hear him speak of his accomplishments and his life in general without a continued acknowledgement of how and why he believes he's gotten to this point.

"First and foremost, as always, [I give thanks] to my lord god above on high," said Henderson. "He's blessed me every day of my life and I want to continue to praise his name and thank him. Not just after you win a world championship fight, not just after you win a Super Bowl, not just after you win an NBA championship, I want to thank him each and every chance I get. Every interview I make it a point to thank god and praise his name."

Though he's focused on getting through his first fight in the Octagon, and the tough task at hand in Mark Bocek, Henderson's ultimate goal is to be the best fighter in the division. For him, that means a willingness to take on any and all comers, and now that he's in the UFC he feels that option will be available to him.

"[I want to fight] everybody," he said. "I'm here for everybody. I want to be the best fighter at 155 lbs. I want to be the best fighter on the planet, period. I want to beat everybody, there's not any one guy in particular... but as a true competitor and a man who loves a challenge, I want to face everybody, I want to beat everybody."

Henderson and Bocek meet on the pay-per-view card of next week's UFC 129 event from the Rogers Centre. NFL Draft 2011: Ranking Seattle Seahawks Needs by Position on Draft Day.

This year's NFL draft will soon begin, and football fans across the country are starting to get amped up with thoughts of who their favorite team's picks will be.

This is the day when everyone who believes they are a draft "expert" will find out if they really are or not.

One of the most important aspects of drawing conclusions about college players and where they will end up after the draft, is understanding the true value of "team needs."

Sure, there are popular favorites we'd all love to have, like LSU CB Patrick Peterson, or Texas A&M DE Von Miller, but how often do we get what we really want?

Shall we say, almost never?!

The Seattle Seahawks are a team entering today's big event desperate for some fresh, young talent.

They will not share in the luxury of having a top 10, 15, or even 20 first round choice, but will have to wait until the 25 spot to name their "pick of the litter."

Who will they choose?

Should they try to acquire a QB protege to ride Matt Hasselbeck's (assuming he is re-signed) coattail into stardom, or should they go after an offensive line stud to help bolster the run and pass game.

Who will it be if they decide to go defense?

Perhaps a CB to add depth to one of the worst ranked pass defending teams in the NFL.

Or, maybe a DE to help the defensive line penetrate and add pressure to opposing QBs.

To better understand exactly where the Seahawks currently stand, I have compiled a list of player positions in immediate need of attention, and assigned a score of 1 (low) to 10 (high), expressing the demand for new talent.

Immediate Team Needs

Quarterback-10: With aging 13-year veteran Matt Hasselbeck, and third string QB, J.P. Losman on the free agency block, there are two gaping holes at one of the most important positions on the team.

Assuming the Seahawks don't re-sign either player, the QB position ranks highest on their list of needs.

Cornerback-9: Last season Seattle had one of  worst ranked pass defenses in the NFL (27th).

Starters Marcus Trufant, 29 and Kelly Jennings, 27 are rapidly approaching over-the-hill status, and are beginning to show signs of deficiency.

Acquiring a high-ranking, quality pick at this position would add depth to an aging, lackluster defensive backfield.

Safety-8: Free agent Lawyer Milloy will turn 38 in September, and will be a big question mark going into the new season.

The 'Hawks had a slew of unproven defensive backs on last season's roster, but that list will soon be narrowed down after team cuts and FA.

Drafting a safety between rounds three and five will provide some extra security to a position in question for the 2011-12 season.

Offensive Tackle-8: Getting some help on the offensive line is a must.

Like their defense, the offense ranked near last after receiving a less than stellar performance from their front five.

Both age and durability are a concern at this position, and will be again if the Seahawks don't add some cushioning in the draft and/or free agency.

Defensive Tackle-7: Penetration will be key for Seattle going into next season.

The DL allowed an average of 118.9 yards per game, and ranked 21st in the league. It wasn't the worst, but far from the best among 31 other teams.

There are other areas that need attention, but none more than those mentioned above.

For sake of clarity, lets take a brief look at how the other positions rank.

Wide Receiver: 6.5

Defensive End: 6

Guard: 6

Middle Linebacker: 6

Center: 5

Outside Linebacker: 5

Tight End: 4

Running Back: 3.5

Special Teams: 2

Matt Grice returns to UFC for featherweight bout with Ricardo Lamas at UFC on Versus 4

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_883.jpg
Former UFC lightweight Matt Grice makes his return to the organization in June for the first time since UFC 100.

The organization this week announced that Grice will meet Ricardo Lamas in a featherweight bout at UFC on Versus 4, coming to Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center on June 26.

Grice went just 1-3 in his first stint in the UFC, getting submitted by Terry Etim and Shannon Gugerty, and losing a TKO to Matt Veach to go along with his lone decision victory over Jason Black. However, Grice has won four straight fights outside of the organization since then, and with the UFC now promoting the featherweight division he'll return at 145 lbs.

Lamas sports a 4-2 mark under the Zuffa banner, all with the WEC. His last appearance inside the WEC didn't go well for him though, as he had a three fight win streak snapped by a knockout loss to Yuri Alcantra at WEC 53.

UFC on Versus 4 will be headlined by an exciting welterweight clash between Nate Marquardt and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.

QUOTABLES: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua motivated for "revenge" against Forrest Griffin, excited to fight in Brazil at UFC 134

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Shogun_Rua_3.jpeg
"My biggest motivation is that I'll fight Forrest Griffin, who's a top athlete, one of the [best]. Of course I'll be another fighter for this bout, I'll do it all over again, that's my dream. Now we talk to each other, we are [colleagues]... But he's a good fighter, he's a big name [in] the division, a strong guy, so he's a guy that, in case I win, it'll bring me closer to the belt. So that motivates me. Of course I want revenge [for my loss to him in 2007], so that's my chance to revenge that loss, and that's an extra motivational factor. But I'll be focused because I need a win, not only because of the revenge I want. I want the win. I'm happy [to fight in Brazil]. It's a thing that, when I [lost], I was pretty upset, sad, but it's been a while and now I'm motivated, knowing I'll fight again. They've offered me that bout and that's a fight I'd [asked] them [for], so it was perfect. For me it's great: fighting in my country, close to my family. That [is] a dream coming true, especially being in UFC, which is a mark for MMA history in Brazil."

-Mauricio "Shogun" Rua talks to Tatame.com about getting a rematch with Forrest Griffin and fighting in his home country of Brazil in August.

Penick's Analysis: Pretty much every Brazilian fighter on the UFC's roster has wanted to get themselves on this UFC Rio card in August, and "Shogun" is no different. This fight with Forrest Griffin is really the perfect fight for both with the events that went down in the first quarter of the year, and with that fight having been nearly four years ago it's still a fresh matchup in the division, with both fighters in very different spots in their careers than they were in 2007. Rua, along with the rest of his countrymen, will have the full backing of a raucous and excited home crowd, and it should make for a great atmosphere for the UFC when the event comes in August. This likely co-main event, or third fight from the top, will be a fantastic part of that as well.

Riki Fukuda vs. Rafael Natal reportedly on tap for UFC 133 in August

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_882.jpg
A middleweight bout between Riki Fukuda and Rafael Natal is coming to UFC 133 in August, according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Fukuda, the former DEEP Middleweight Champion in Japan, made his UFC debut in February in Australia at UFC 127. Taking on The Ultimate Fighter 11's Nick Ring, Fukuda looked to have done enough in the fight to earn a decision victory, but the judges saw the fight for Ring, snapping a seven fight win streak.

Natal's UFC career hasn't gotten off to a great start. After a decision loss to Rich Attonito in his UFC debut last September, Natal went to a draw with Jesse Bongfeldt in his last fight at UFC 124 in December. Of his 12 career victories, Natal has finished all but two of them, and will look to get his first win since a knockout of Travis Lutter last May.

UFC 133 is expected to take place in Philadelphia this August, though the date and location has not yet been revealed.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This should be a good matchup for the card. Fukuda got screwed out of a decision against Ring. He won that fight and it was not a good decision on the part of the judges in Australia. That said, he'll have a good chance to erase the memory of that fight with a good performance here, though Natal will surely be doing everything in his power to win this fight, as a loss may lead to his release being winless in three fights. But it should make for a good matchup in August.

UFC secures venues in Liverpool, Nottingham for potential October 15 event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_887.jpg
The UFC will return to the U.K. for the second straight October this year, as Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com reports that the organization has booked two possible venues for an October 15 event.

Per the report, venues in Nottingham and Liverpool have been tapped for the event, and Nottingham could be the leading candidate should Dan Hardy be available for the card, as that is his hometown.

Unless they book another event in the U.K. prior to the October date, it would be the UFC's first event there since last October's UFC 120 in London, England. This would mark the UFC's first-ever event in either city, as they have previously run in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle.

Though their returns to the United Kingdom have gotten fewer and farther between, UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik has promised a more frequent return across the pond in the near future.

ROUNDTABLE (pt. 2 of 2): Who should Nick Diaz fight next after defeating Paul Daley? Perez, Hobaugh, Leet, Williams and Hyden

Strikeforce_Diaz_vs_Daley_poster_180_13.jpg
Who do you want to see Nick Diaz fight next and why?

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

No one in Strikeforce has even a slight chance to face Nick Diaz. I think now is the time to bring him back into the UFC fold. That's where his real competition is and where he can establish a lasting legacy that seems to grow more and more with each fight. Besides, with Georges St. Pierre as the resident good guy, no better bad boy to counter that than Diaz in the welterweight division.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I think that Nick Diaz is one of the best welterweight fighters in the world. A fight against Thiago Alves or Josh Koscheck makes the most sense. He has dominated Strikeforce, but Strikeforce is not the UFC. I feel like had he stayed in the UFC, he would have already challenged GSP for his title. If he is able to fight and win against two top ten fighters, then he will have earned a title shot in the UFC.

LARAMEY LEET, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Well in this very moment, we will not see a UFC/Strikeforce card. So with that being said Strikeforce has NO REAL contenders to his title. Yeah, there is Tyron Woodley, but he is too early in his career to test Diaz. So with no copromotion and no contenders at the moment, you do the next best thing; super fights or a rematch with a worthy opponent. The only person that I think could make an exciting rematch is Paul Daley. With both fighters having a proper training camp this time it should be packed with more excitement than the first. Then you have the Diaz- Mayhem bout; the bout would be easy to sell and get tons of spotlight. It would be fun to watch, pointless as far as rankings, but one hell of a grudge match.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Georges St. Pierre, assuming GSP beats Jake Shields. I don't think Nick Diaz can defeat St. Pierre, but it'd be a lot of fun to watch him try.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Assuming that Georges St. Pierre gets through Jake Shields as I think he will, I'd like to see Nick Diaz fight GSP next. No one in the UFC Welterweight division has separated from the pack so Diaz getting a title shot wouldn't be out of bounds. Diaz has also proven that he's a legit threat and I think it'd be fun to see him fight GSP.

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC veterans Jens Pulver and Drew McFedries will head up the next Titan Fighting Championships event on HDNet on May 27, the organization announced today.

"Our first two events on HDNet were met with both praise from critics and fans alike. May 21 Is The End Of The World?

Well there it is Sherdoggers less then a month to live! Gee I thought this was not on till 2012! So the fun should start soon I guess?

"PHOENIX -- Nearly two dozen billboards proclaiming the end of the world are cropping up all over the Valley. The billboards warn to "Save the date, the return of Christ is May 21, 2011."

Behind the billboards' claim is an 89-year-old former engineer, Harold Camping. He broadcasts his teachings over Family Radio; which he owns. Camping claims to have cracked the mystery of the Bible: that Jesus is coming back on May 21, accompanied by a worldwide earthquake.

It is difficult to determine how many of Camping's followers are here in the Valley, as they do not gather corporately. Quite the opposite, they believe modern churches -- all churches -- are evil.

One of Camping's followers is Windle Tucker. Tucker is a former pastor who left his church after hearing Camping's teachings.

"But we know simultaneously when the earthquake is happening, the saints will be in rapture," Tucker explained.

That means they believe those who follow Camping's teachings will disappear into thin air May 21, leaving the rest here on earth to face the great tribulation.

"After the earthquake, those that are left here will go through five months of turmoil, just like you see over in Japan with nuclear fallout and with the earth in chaos," Tucker said.

The Family Radio followers believe that the entire world will be consumed by fire on Oct. 21.

Why May 21? Camping teaches that is exactly 7,000 years after the great flood depicted in the Bible. Camping believes if God told Noah when to expect the rain, why wouldn't He warn us?

Jeff Gonzalez just quit his job at Intel to get ready for Jesus' return.

"So when He told [Noah] that in seven days that the flood was going to come and destroy the earth, in effect God was also saying, 'I will bring judgment in 7,000 years from this day.'"

Dr. Wayne Grudem is a research professor of theology at Phoenix Seminary. Also a Bible translator of original Greek and Hebrew texts, he agrees that Jesus is coming back, but nobody - including Harold Camping - knows when. He also insists it's impossible to determine the exact date of the flood.

"You can't just add up the ages of the people in the Bible who descended, because there are gaps in those genealogies," said Grudem. "For example, in the New Testament, the angel speaks to Joseph, and says, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.' David lived in 1,000 B.C., so 'Joseph son of David' skips 1,000 years."

Grudem is concerned that Camping's Family Radio has the beginnings of a cult. Grudem does, however, have one prediction of his own.

"And then what will happen on May 22? Camping will say, 'Whoops, I got the math wrong, let me recalculate,'" Grudem said. "And then he'll set another date, and it will go on like that probably until he dies. Unless Jesus does come back; which could happen, any day."

for when they shall say peace and safety....sudden destruction shall come upon them and they shall not escape to seperate Christ from God is a very dangerous place to be...I am Jehovah and besides me there is no other savior and many verses proclaim that Christ , the holy spirit and God are all one......read the 1st 5 books of revelation and tell me what God says about the early churches....only from Gods mercys is anybody saved...not because we are trying to put the word out....and he is still saving untill judgment day may 21 2011...it would be wise to look at all the information on this....before it is mocked and judged...the bible declares God does nothing unless he reveals his secrets to his profits....christ comes as a theif in the night.....for when they shall say peace and safety...sudden destruction shall come upon them and they shall not escape....be warned He is prideful, wrong and full of Satan, HE IS AN Anti Christ, He has stupid followers who see him as the only answer to the Bible. He thinks he has ALL the answers and his dumb followers agree with all he says. He is filled with a Demon..See here how blind is followers are

Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante reportedly to meet Ovince St. Preux in Strikeforce this July

Though Strikeforce erred in announcing a bout between Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal and Ovince St. Preux for June 18 that was not going to be coming to the event, St. Preux is being targeted for a fight this summer.

According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce is targeting a bout between St. Preux and former Light Heavyweight Champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante for their July event.

St. Preux has been taking a well-deserved rest after taking three fights in Strikeforce in just over a month to finish 2010 and begin 2011. The former NCAA football player at the University of Tennessee, is riding a seven fight win streak that includes four fights in Strikeforce.

After picking up his first seven wins by stoppage, St. Preux has gone to a decision in his last three fights, winning all three over Antwain Britt, Benji Radach, and most recently Abongo Humphrey in January.

Cavalcante will look to rebound from losing his title to Dan Henderson in March in Columbus, Ohio. Cavalcante captured the title in August of 2010 with his third straight win in Strikeforce, a third round TKO over Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. The loss to Henderson was only his third career defeat, but his second by TKO in the last two years.

No date or location has been set for the July event, but it's also expected to feature Henderson against Fedor Emelianenko, Lawal against Roger Gracie and more.

Penick's Analysis: This is a big step up in competition for St. Preux. He's been impressive in being able to win the three fights in a row he did in about a seven week span, but he's never fought anyone at Cavalcante's level. But that makes for a huge opportunity for him and a chance to pull off an upset. For Cavalcante, it's a fight where he can get back on track against a guy that has gotten some exposure on Showtime recently and has had a lot of success in the last couple of years.
